Over forty years ago, the spiritual leadership of Berean Baptist Church recognized that the mandate to raise children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord incorporated academic education. Therefore, the school we know as Berean Baptist Academy formed for the purpose of growing students spiritually and academically. Over our 40 plus years, Berean has seen changes in size, leadership, and facilities.
In the fall of 1975, Berean Christian School opened with 38 students. The oldest students were in the 10th grade, and the youngest were in K4. The school expanded by a class each year eventually graduating three seniors during the spring of 1978. In 1982, the school changed its name from Berean Christian School to Berean Baptist Academy. In 1985, student enrollment climbed to 184 students. In 1989, Berean opened the main school building at 518 Glensford Drive, which allowed the student body size to increase exponentially. In1995, enrollment reached 305. In 2005, the academy enrollment dropped to 256. Realizing that the academy needed more space to grow and not feel crowded, modular educational buildings were added to the Berean Baptist Church complex in the fall of 2010. Enrollment soon climbed over 400 students. For the past five years, student enrollment has exceeded 400 students. This year, the BBA enrollment exceeded 450 students. The 2015-2016 school year saw BBC and BBA break ground on an expanded educational space that will allow student enrollment to grow. Indeed, the future is bright for “The Home of the Bulldogs.”
Like the educational footprint and student body, the academy has changed leadership throughout the years. Each pastor, administrator, and principal have expanded the rich heritage of BBA and laid the groundwork for a rich legacy. Pastor Steven Byrd led BBA as the Pastor of Berean Baptist Church and Academy from the founding of the school until 2006. Pastor Byrd also served as Administrator of BBA from 1975 to 1998, and again, from 2002 to 2006. During those years, Douglas Davis (1975-1984), Phillip Farrow (1984-1986), Mark French (1986-1995), Roger Gafkin (1995-2001), Steven Wilson (2001-2005), and Don Adams (2005-2007) all served as the BBA Principal.
In 2006, Pastor Sean Harris assumed leadership of Berean Baptist Church and Academy. Pastor Harris served as the administrator of BBA from 2006-2014. During his years as the administrator, instructional leadership was divided between a Lower School Principal and an Upper School Principal. Vonda Chapman has served as the Lower School Principal since 2007. Don Adams served as the Upper School Principal from 2007 to 2013, and Jack Farmer served as the Upper School Principal from the fall of 2013 through the summer of 2017. In the fall of 2017, Jeff Woosley will assume the position of Upper School Principal.
In 2014, Berean Baptist Academy applied for accreditation, and Jack Farmer was named the Head of School. Pastor Sean Harris assumed the leadership of the School Board as President of the Board. Today, BBA is blessed to have the following administrative team leading us into the future: Jack Farmer (Head of School), Jeff Woosley (Upper School Principal), Vonda Chapman (Lower School Principal), Don Adams (Director of Advancement), Sandra Adams (Pre-school Director), and Daniel Knox (Director of Athletics).
